My eight-year-old son has been attending a Cantonese school but has just got a place at an international school. His English skills are not that good, and I’m worried that he won’t keep up with his classmates. He is upset about leaving his friends and doesn’t want to go.
First of all, the international school must have considered your son’s English skills to be good enough to access the curriculum or it would not have given him a place.
Moving to a new school can be daunting for any child, especially if it means being separated from long-time friends, and the [...] Continue Reading…

Learning to speak the language of cats: How they’re actually telling humans …
Some time ago, I delivered a cat into this world and now I am raising him because he is my son and I am his mother. (That’s the truth — please don’t dispute my personal history in the comments.) The one thing is, my cat never learned to speak English. That’s not a problem for me because, as I said, I am his mother and I understand all his thoughts instinctively, but it has meant that he’s been unable to apply for the best preschools and hasn’t made very many friends outside the family.
So, when I heard that Dr. [...] Continue Reading…
Teachers connect with language learners with strategy and purpose
Amy Peddie had a hand in shaping Southport High School’s program to help kids learn to speak English, but she almost said no to working with language learners at all.
“I don’t know how,” She remembered thinking. “I’ve never taught that before.”
The influx of immigrant students in Perry Township has placed a special pressure on teachers who previously did not have specialized training in working with English language learners. What the district learned as the number of students learning English grew has benefited both the students and their teachers.
But back then, Peddie was so intimidated she thought about quitting teaching altogether.
Instead, [...] Continue Reading…

The seven big language learning issues facing the UK
Do multiple foreign languages bind communities or divide them? Photograph: Martin Argles
Despite the UK’s pivotal role on the global stage and its melting pot of cultures, the country remains largely a nation of monoglots. But what is holding back Brits from learning a foreign language?
The Guardian and the British Academy launched the Case for Language Learning to investigate the reasons behind the UK’s shortage of foreign language skills, discussing the importance and value of learning a foreign tongue. The Living Languages report highlights many of the debates and thinking generated by the two-year project, and brings together some of [...] Continue Reading…
